SILCHAR: The Silchar District Sports Association (DSA)’s Barak Valley Open Women’s Football Tournament 2025 commenced on Monday at S.M. Dev Stadium, Silchar DSA. 
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty (chief guest). He emphasised the importance of football, sports, and physical activities. He stated that the government is committed to encouraging and supporting women athletes, acknowledging their impressive performances. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for their efforts, and appreciated the District Sports Association (DSA) for kicking off the season with a women’s football tournament. He also expressed hope that the ongoing construction of the DSA pavilion would be completed by February next year.
DSA president Shibabrata Dutta said a total number of 14 teams will participate (knock-out basis tournament). The final match will be played on August 24. All the matches will start at 3.15 pm. It is sponsored by Hotel Valley Inn’s Nishitendu Das and Dipak Kanti Dhar. Former female footballers A. Sunanda Chanu and Srimati Karmakar were honoured.
DSA acting secretary Debashish Shome, football secretary Bikash Das, Sukhen Das, treasurer Buddhadeb Choudhury, AGS Arijit Gupta, sponsor Nishitendu Das, AGS Ajay Kumar Roy, sports personality Nirmalya Nath and others were present.
They highlighted the logistical and preparatory efforts made by the DSA to ensure a smooth conduct of the tournament. Last year they had only six teams, this year 14. They also have plans to start first division football tournament.
